When water is supplied to the 200X pressure-reducing and stabilizing valve from the inlet, it flows through the needle valve into the main valve control chamber. The outlet pressure acts on the pilot valve via a conduit. When the outlet pressure exceeds the pilot valve spring's set value, the pilot valve closes. Drainage from the control chamber ceases, causing the pressure within the main valve control chamber to rise and close the main valve, thereby preventing further increase in outlet pressure.
The pressure in the main valve control chamber decreases. The inlet pressure causes the main valve to open. At steady state, the inflow and outflow to the control chamber are equal, the main valve opening remains constant, and the outlet pressure stabilizes.
The outlet pressure can be set by adjusting the pilot valve spring.
